Befriending aid for communities in Warwickshire

Social prescribing service ConnectWELL are offering to support people across Warwickshire who are isolated and feel in need of extra support.

The Rugby-based organisation has started up the new befriending service in response to the recent Covid 19 crisis.

The telephone befriending service started weekly calls on weekdays 9.00am-5.00pm from this month, targeting those people isolated or at risk of isolation and who are therefore less able to access the help they need by other means.

The ConnectWELL telephone befriending service is open to referrals from health professionals and local Covid 19 support groups. Other professionals such as sports and leisure, arts, council or voluntary organisations can also refer clients to the free-to-use service.

Gemma Smith, ConnectWELL Manager explained: “ConnectWELL has been operating throughout the recent pandemic, staying in touch and reaching out to vulnerable people to support the effort to stay well and protect the NHS.

“We have seen that many people – for example those who are shielding – are often very isolated even though local communities have responded so positively to help out their neighbours.

“That’s why we have started up our new free, telephone befriending service. If anyone needs a regular call then we will be able to help. While we are at it, we will make sure people aren’t missing out on support available from their local community.”
